Costa Rica Done Right: The Secret to Balancing Thrill and Tranquility

I just recently returned from a trip to Costa Rica, where I had the chance to explore and research some of the country’s top regions, resorts, and experiences—and I can confidently say, this destination truly has it all.

One day, you’re ziplining through a rainforest canopy or spotting sloths in the trees. The next, you’re floating in natural hot springs surrounded by tropical gardens, with Arenal Volcano in the distance. And somehow, it all feels easy—like every moment flows naturally into the next.

That’s the magic of Costa Rica—it’s adventure and ease in perfect balance. And when it’s thoughtfully planned, you don’t have to choose between the two.

Why My Clients Love Costa Rica (and You Will Too)

Costa Rica has a way of bringing people back to center. It’s adventurous, lush, and full of life—but it’s also deeply relaxing. You can feel that “Pura Vida” spirit everywhere: in the smiles of the locals, the sound of the rainforest at night, the stillness that comes after a long hike, or the first sip of locally grown coffee in the morning.

It’s also incredibly approachable: safe, friendly, and easy to get around. In a single trip, you can experience volcanoes, rainforests, and beaches—all without long travel days or overcomplicated logistics.

When I help clients plan a Costa Rica itinerary, I focus on finding that balance—pairing thrilling experiences with space to breathe, and making sure the details flow seamlessly so you can be fully present for the moments that matter.

The Perfect Pairing: Arenal + Guanacaste

Arenal: Where the Adventure Begins

Arenal is Costa Rica’s adventure capital, and for good reason. It’s home to some of the country’s most iconic experiences—lush rainforest, hanging bridges, and the majestic Arenal Volcano rising above it all.

During my visit, I stayed at Tabacón Thermal Resort & Spa, where the natural hot springs are woven right into the landscape. The resort’s private trails lead through the jungle to a vivid green lagoon at the base of the volcano—a quiet, hidden gem I’ll never forget.

One of the many natural hot springs areas that Tabacon has for guests!

We also toured the Nayara Resorts, a trio of breathtaking properties that redefine eco-luxury. Every detail, from the design to the dining, feels intentional—immersing you in nature without giving up a hint of comfort.

While in Arenal, we went on a sloth hike (and spotted quite a few of them!), joined a local cooking and cocktail class, and ended each day soaking in those thermal waters surrounded by rainforest.

Had an amazing time going on a sloth hike!

And because every great trip has a story… I realized after arriving that I’d forgotten my raincoat. (Not ideal, considering October is the rainy season!) I ended up buying an overpriced one from the resort gift shop, joking that as soon as I did, the weather would clear up. Sure enough, we had absolutely glorious days—blue skies, volcano views, and just enough rain to make the rainforest glisten. Maybe it was luck, maybe it was timing… or maybe it was just good planning. 😉

For travelers who want even more adventure, I often recommend adding:

  • Ziplining through the canopy for panoramic volcano views

  • Whitewater rafting or waterfall hikes

  • Coffee and chocolate tastings

  • Private spa or hot spring evenings under the stars

Arenal offers the best of both worlds—high-energy adventure and pure, restorative calm—all within the same day.

Guanacaste: Your Well-Earned Exhale

After days of rainforest exploration, Guanacaste is where you slow down and savor it all. The beaches are golden, the sunsets unreal, and the resorts blend barefoot luxury with effortless service.

I stayed at the Waldorf Astoria Costa Rica Punta Cacique, a property that takes relaxation seriously but never forgets the details. We enjoyed morning walks along the beach, indulgent spa time, and an incredible coffee experience that showcased Costa Rica’s deep coffee culture.

Here, I help clients plan experiences that let them unwind their way—whether that’s a catamaran cruise, snorkeling, surfing, or simply time by the pool with a cocktail and that endless ocean breeze.

The Waldorf Astoria Costa Rica was the perfect way to spend the last few days of our trip enjoying the beach and pools

Pro Tip: Pair Arenal and Guanacaste for the ultimate first-time Costa Rica itinerary—rainforest and volcano adventures up north, then beachside tranquility to wrap it all up.

Bonus Stop: Monteverde

If you have a little extra time—or are planning a return trip—Monteverde is the perfect addition. The cloud forest feels like another world: cooler, mistier, and filled with birdsong. I loved crossing the hanging bridges, where clouds drifted between the treetops and the forest seemed to hum with life.

It’s the kind of place that invites you to slow down, breathe deep, and remember why you travel in the first place.

The cloud forest in Monteverde offer a stunning view.
