Why Alaska Cruises Make the Ultimate Multi-Generational Trip
A view of our cruise ship while in Juneau.
On the last night of our Alaska cruise, while my sister was busy packing up her cabin, I was chasing my almost 2-year-old nephew down the hallway. He was running back and forth, chanting “happy, happy, happy.” And honestly—that summed up the entire trip.
Alaska was a place where everyone in our group—from a toddler to grandparents in their 70s—felt that same sense of joy. And that’s exactly why an Alaska cruise makes the ultimate multi-generational trip.
1. Something for Every Generation
We had 13 people traveling together, spanning three generations:
an almost 2-year-old,
two grade-schoolers (ages 5 and 7),
a 16-year-old and a 19-year-old,
adults in our 40s and 50s,
and grandparents in their mid-70s.
Everyone found something that was “just right” for them. The little ones loved the kids’ club (my nephews begged to go anytime it was open). My teen and young adult enjoyed the freedom of exploring—my 16-year-old even got in training runs in port towns—while the adults and grandparents had a mix of excursions: the scenic White Pass Railway (which we all did together), cultural tours, nature lectures, spa visits, and more.
Alaska really does have something for every age and interest.
2. Scenery That Wows Everyone
Glacier Bay National Park was unforgettable. We were lucky enough to take family photos on deck while surrounded by towering ice and mountains. At times, I couldn’t believe how close we were to land—untouched, undeveloped stretches of wilderness that went on for miles.
All 13 of us together!
We spotted whales, orcas, seals, and even hawks. And in a moment that will stick with us forever, our ship actually hit a submerged glacier while leaving Glacier Bay. Thankfully there was no damage or danger—but the vibration running through the ship was a reminder that this is true wilderness.
The scenery alone makes Alaska worth it, but sharing it as a family? That’s what makes it unforgettable.
3. Meals Made Easy
Feeding a group of 13 could have been a logistical nightmare—but on a cruise, meals were a breeze. We ate together most nights in the main dining room, and everyone found something they loved. My almost 2-year-old nephew became the star of the table, showing off how much he could eat and drink (“agua!” was his favorite word).
When someone was hungry outside mealtimes, it was simple—just grab something from the buffet or a quick-serve spot. No debates, no searching for a restaurant that works for everyone. Just ease.
I said yes to the bacon appetizer, was so surprised when this is how it was served!
4. Space to Be Together (and Apart)
What made this trip work so well is that we could be together without being on top of each other.
The Crow’s Nest lounge became our family’s favorite hangout spot. We’d gather for coffee, cocktails, or board games while watching endless views out the floor-to-ceiling windows. Those unhurried mornings and evenings felt like the heart of the trip.
But when someone needed quiet, it was just as easy to retreat. Our balcony cabins offered private space and incredible views, so even downtime felt like an adventure.
The incredible view right from our balcony!
5. A Cruise Designed for All Comfort Levels
Not everyone in our group had cruised before, and there was a little hesitation about whether they’d enjoy it. By the end, everyone agreed it was easier and more fun than they imagined.
From trivia games to comedy shows, art classes to tea time, there were activities for every mood and interest. The mix of structure and flexibility meant each person could design their own perfect day—then come back together to share stories.
The grandparents left already talking about the next multi-generational trip they want to plan.
6. Why Planning Ahead Matters
Alaska is a popular summer destination, which means crowds and limited availability. To make the most of it, it’s important to:
Plan early (so you get the best itineraries, ships, and excursions for your family).
Choose the right fit (cruise lines and itineraries vary widely).
Find the balance (plan enough to maximize your experience, but don’t over-plan—leave room for those spontaneous, magical moments).
Handled well, it’s the kind of trip where every family member comes home saying: That was worth it.
